Research methodology - Essay Example Deciles divide the observations into ten equal parts and quartiles divide the observations into four equal parts. Measures of dispersion measures how varied the observations are in reference to several factors. This is an important factor in analyzing data in research because measures of central tendency are not enough or do not necessarily depict the data. Two data may have the same mean but have varying dispersions. That is why in reporting the mean, the minimum and maximum, range, standard deviation, and variance are reported as well. The minimum and maximum values of course only reports the minimum and maximum observed values in the data thereby giving a picture of dispersion. The range reports the distance between the maximum and minimum values, which shows how wide or narrow the gap between these two values. For example, the observed heights of school children in one school varies from 47 inches to 55 inches (which are the minimum and maximum values) thereby giving a difference of 8 inches. In another school, the heights of the children vary from 46 inches to 57 inches thus the difference of 11inches. Thus it can be said that the range of the heights of school children in the first school is less varied with that of the latter. Variance and standard deviation are both measures of how the observations vary in reference to the mean. If there is a large value for the standard deviation this means that the observations are highly dispersed and if the value is low, then the variation is less dispersed. In perception surveys, the variance and standard deviation are usually used to determine to what extent the subjects agree on their observations. Conversion of data to and use of index numbers In as much as some quantities may not be directly observed given their values, they are converted to measurable value that can be manipulated for analysis. Index numbers on the other hand are numbers that measure relative changes of observations with reference to a base su ch that the raw data is not used in order to factor in changes in inflation and the like. The application of least squares regression analyses to data The main goal of a simple linear regression is to fit a straight line through the data that best predicts Y based on X. If we want to know if age predicts IQ or if educational attainment predicts scores in information literacy, we use linear regression. The method of least squares is the one that minimizes the sum of the squares of deviations of the observed value of Y from its expected value. The calculation of correlation coefficients for data pairs; both Pearsonââ¬â¢s product moment and Spearmanââ¬â¢s rank correlation coefficients Correlations are used to determine the relationships of variables but not to predict. For example, we want to determine the relationship between age and weight for employees of a particular firm, we analyze the data using correlation. In Pearsonââ¬â¢s product moment correlation where the values r ange from 1 to ââ¬â1 where the sign indicates the relationship. A positive sign shows a direct relationship while a negative sign shows an inverse relationship. If the correlation is +/- 1 this means that there is a strong relationship and low if otherwise. Spearmanââ¬â¢s rank correlation involves ranking the values and is similarly interpreted like

Legal Framework in Employment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words
Legal Framework in Employment - Essay Example As per common law, an employer has the right to dismiss an employee with prior notification. Terminating an employee without prior notice is a ââ¬Ëwrongful dismissalââ¬â¢ against which an employee can sue the employer. Unfair dismissal is created by statute law, and it may occur even with proper notification. The Employment Rights Act 1996 has given six potentially fair reasons for terminating an employee. The employer has to ensure that the decision of dismissal, he has made justified and is conducted fairly.Employment Relations Act 1996, section 98 (4), provides details to declare a dismissal fair or unfair. The employer is responsible to justify a fair dismissal and likewise give reasons for unfair dismissal. In any case, if an employer is unable to prove that the dismissal is justified as per the Employment Relations Act 1996, it will be declared as unfair. Not only the law provides support to the employees the employers also have equal defenses to claim the fairness of thei r dismissal decision. In the case [British Leyland (UK) Ltd v Swift, (1981)], the employerââ¬â¢s decision was declared as ââ¬Ëfairââ¬â¢ by the court of law as the employer justified his decision claiming to terminate an employee due to misconduct. In another case [Iceland Frozen Foods Limited v Jones, (1982)], the employer terminated a night-shift foreman at the warehouse. The employer held the employee responsible because he could not secure the warehouse at night which resulted in slow production.

Science Plant Study and Animal Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Science Plant Study and Animal Study - Essay Example A mix of dense, green-grey color, they provide rich ornamental view at open places giving a natural feel in concrete neighborhood. They are intolerant of shade and require space. The name Grevillea is in memory of Charles F. Greville (1749-1807), one of the founders of the Royal Horticultural Society of London. As diverse as trees, shrubs and ground covers, Proteaceae plants are found in frost free, arid regions with scanty rainfall. Warm, dry conditions suit these plants and they thrive in environments that other plants may not find conducive to survive. Some also bloom in winter. The name Proteaceae is taken after the Greek god, Proteus, whose penchant for self-transformations in various shapes has passed on to the plant which also assumes different shapes in different regions of the world. The protea species are tough, hard and resilient. They require minimal nutrients, very little moist, and loose and gravelly soil. The plant is designed to survive in tough conditions by retaining moist in its leaves and flowers. It is not compatible with moist saturated soil and is more suited for mineral rich soil with less phosphate content and where water drains fast. Hillside slopes where the soil is loose also serve as ideal breeding ground for proteaceae plants. The flower is the size of a dinner plate. It is showy and decorative. It has brilliant orange-yellow color. The flowers are nectar-bearing, and attract birds and insects. Some species attract insects and trap them with their sticky exterior killing them for no apparent reason. Leaves Proteaceae leaves range from large, round rainforest types to the needle-like variety. Hairless and green on the surface, the leaf bears white or ash colored silky hair underneath. It is alternate and two to four inches in size. The pointed fern like leaves of Grevillea robusta give way to beautiful golden yellow bloom of the flowers during spring. (University of Connecticut). Grevillea robust leaf The leaves cause quite a litter at the onset of spring as they begin to shed in large numbers. (Edward F. Gilman and Dennis G. Watson). Pollination The plant's reproduction system is unique and contains both the male and female functions. The flower performs bisexual functions by its ability to reproduce on its own.Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 1 shows the Grevillea robusta immature flower with the perianth (four dark pink yellow border strips). Figure 2 shows G. robusta mature flower without the perianth and the ovary, style and the pollen presenter with stigma visible. The outer part of the flower is a bract called perianth. The bract is a scale like covering found around the lower part of a flower. It is hard and protects the inner portion

3D Printing in the world Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
3D Printing in the world - Research Paper Example This technique is a modern technique which differs in many ways from the machine techniques that were traditionally used. The traditional methods relied on the methods involving removal of materials such as cutting. This is why they were known as subtractive processes whereas 3D printing is known as additive process. The 3D printing uses the digital technology and these printers were initially manufactured by China. These printers came in the late 1980ââ¬â¢s and ever since then they have been increasingly used all over the world. In the beginning of the 21st century, as the digital technology became more popular and advanced, the growth in the sales of the 3D printers was greatly observed. The sales of these printers increased in various parts of the world where they were used for new and innovative purposes. Gradually, as the sales and the demand grew, the costs of these printers fell immensely since they were first manufactured. Some of the purposes for which these machines were used were in industrial uses, architecture, jewelry, aerospace, engineering, medical, education, information systems and many others (Griffith, 2012). 3D printing is the technology to create materials and objects using a sequential layers technique. The materials which are produced by using the layering process can be anywhere in the product life cycle. However, the subtractive methods of manufacturing objects can be used as traditional methods in manufacturing. 3D printing was invented by Charles W. Hull (Chuck). In the mid 1980ââ¬â¢s when it was invented, it used a stereolithography technique. This technique used a UV laser which was shined in the vat of an ultraviolet-sensitive photopolymer, and then it traced the object so that it was created on the surface. The polymer would solidify wherever it was touched by the beam, and that beam would print the particular object layer by layer as per the instructions fed in the CAD/CAM file through which it is working. CAD file is comp uter-aided design and CAM is computer-aided manufacturing. Chuck also founded a company which was called 3D Systems. The company made stereolithography machines which expensive machines of over $100,000 used in commercial techniques. 3D Systems is still operating today and now it sells the 3D printers of advanced technology. There is a variety of printers that are manufactured using different advanced technologies ranging from entry-level kits to the advanced commercial systems. The company also provides on-demand services manufacturing parts for business users. Many businesses and industries use the 3D printers and they need the machines to be up to date and maintained. There are many benefits of 3D printing which is why it is immensely used in the world today. Many designers use the 3D printing techniques to rapidly design the concepts and turn them into 3D models or rapid prototyping. It also allows for the rapid design changes which enables the designers to carry out their work rapidly and smoothly using the up to date technologies. The manufacturers are also allowed to produce the products rapidly on demand rather than on large run, which also increases the management of the sufficient amount of inventory and reduces the warehouse space. 3D printing techniques can help the people living in remote locations to fabricate the objects that would be inaccessible to them otherwise. 3D printing must be a onetime cost because once the designers and businesses have bought the machinery for 3D printing; they can save a lot of material and money which is used in subtractive techniques of manufacturing. The material in this technique is drilled, cut and shaved off; hence raw material can be wasted. 3D printing is

Explain the principle behind the concept of ''General Average''. What Assignment
Explain the principle behind the concept of ''General Average''. What are the essential elements of the 'York-Antwerp Rules' that define a 'General Average' act - Assignment Example In 1864 the York Rules were developed and this was followed with the Antwerp York Rules of 1877. The York Antwerp Rules were the first codification of the General Average. The elements of the York Antwerp Rules include a common danger, voluntary jettison and effort to save must be successful. General Average has many applications including in marine insurance. Current issues with regard to the application of the General average relate to Piracy. The bone of contention is whether general average can be applied in a case of piracy. There exist guidelines that categorically state a situation in which piracy can be covered by the general average. According to Tetley (2000), the principle of GA (General Average) dates to as far back as 3000 years ago. The Rhodian law that was in existence at around this time embodied the principle of general advantage. The principle read in part that in an effort to make a ship to be light, merchandise may be thrown overboard. It goes ahead to state that, that which has been sacrificed (given) for the benefit of all, then, it shall be restored by the contributions of every one. Currently, a record of the Rhodian law is inexistent. The Roman Law is the only source that captures the Rhodian law. The Roman law was captured, expanded and repeated in the Roles of Oleron. The first English decision that has been recorded in reference to the principle of general average was in the year 1799. The first American decision was in 1798 (Tetley, 2000). This was a maritime law concept both in practice and in origin and it had a very restricted application. With time, the evolution of commerce led to the use of general average as a form of marine insurance. There was sharing of losses and risks during maritime ventures. The cargo owner had a right to claim for losses. The ship owner was also allowed to make claims for compensation for the losses that could not be attributed to his fault. The parties made so many
The Veldt Essay Example for Free
The Veldt Essay After reading the story of ââ¬Å"The Veldtâ⬠by Ray Bradbury, I felt shocked. The beginning was all innocent. I thought it would be about how their parents took care of babies in their own nurseries; but after a few paragraphs, I realized that this story was a tragedy. How could chldren even think of killing their own parents? After all, the fact that their parents gave birth to them is the whole reason that they are able to think, act, feel, and talk! When I first read about the lions and how they were feeding, I kind of thought that something really tragic was about to happen. I had no clue, however, that it would include murdering, much less children killing their own parents! The parents have indeed been relying on the machines and technologies too much, and causing their own children to act so too. However, they did buy those machines in order to make sure that their children lived an easy going life, full of adventure. On the other hand, the parents did indeed care for their children. It just seemed that the children did not realize that at all! The children had been spending too much time in that ââ¬Å"nurseryâ⬠causing them to have a twisted mind. They had replaced the house and the nursery as their family. Even though I do see how the parents care for their children, I do agree that they had not cared for them enough. If the father and mother had cared enough, I do wouldââ¬â¢ve realized much earlier and found a way to prevent what would later happen to them. Also, the fatherââ¬â¢s way of solving was way too harsh and abrupt. It had shocked the children too much and because of the fatherââ¬â¢s unthinking way of solving the situation, the children couldnââ¬â¢t take their frustration. Yet, I felt that the children had no right, absolutely no way to kill their parents. Their parents had given them a life that no other children had. They had things that no others have. They should be thinking of how to pay back in the future, but not how to kill their parents for something as moving! I do understand that sometimes parents are unreasonable, always blaming children, yet donââ¬â¢t give chldren the chance to explain themselves. However, parents always think for their own children. Well, who doesnââ¬â¢t? At times, parents could be harsh, strict, and pushy, but one should also think of the times that their parents did everything for them. A mother or father would do anything for their child.

Rome and Han Ccot Essay Example for Free
Rome and Han Ccot Essay Rome and Han China are different in the ways how their slaves were treated. Overall, they were ultimately more similar because of the importance of trade and family. Slaves in Ancient Rome were treated very harshly. They were put in gladiator fights to the death against fellow slaves and occasionally lions for the entertainment of the community, although it was against the law for a citizen to kill another citizenââ¬â¢s slave. Also, 10% of the populations of Rome were slaves, which means if one died, they could be easily replaced. In contrast, only 1% of Han Chinaââ¬â¢s populations were slaves. They were much more valued and thus their owners treated them better. There were two kinds- Privately Owned and State Owned. These slaves could pay for freedom, or be freed by their master or the emperor. It was against the law to kill these slaves at all. Trade in Rome was thought to be beneath the occupation of landholding, although they continue to practice trade throughout Roman history. The Senate was not allowed to participate in commerce because they were too prestigious to be affiliating with it. Similar to Han China, agriculture was a much better occupation than trade. Merchants, however wealthy, were looked down on because they looked like they could surpass social boundaries because of their riches. In Ancient Rome, loyalty to family and state was highly important. The nobles of Rome were constantly reminded to be aware of their fathers and grandfathers successes. We know this because the term pietas; meaning ââ¬Å"dutifulnessâ⬠; depicts these values. Also, we know of these the importance of family because typically at a Roman funeral, they would exhibit masksââ¬â¢ of their ancestors and their deeds. This regard to ancestors resembles that of Confucianism, which was highly practiced in Han China. The core of Confucianism was known as ââ¬Å"filial pietyâ⬠, meaning the respect and obedience that children owed their parents.
